Tonantzin
Nicosia, Cyprus (visit: 1st February 2020)
an authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Nicosia
As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you are immediately welcomed by the warm staff and it definitely feels like no other Mexican restaurant you have been to in CY. Knowing that the place is owned and run by a true Mexican and the fact that Tonantzin and Brewfella’s have joined forces to make this an awesome experience, we knew we were off to a great start!
Just the name itself sounds so intriguing. In classical Aztec mythology and among present-day Nahuas, Tonantzin is the title of an Aztec mother goddess. The restaurant has such a warm vibe to it that you automatically get drawn into the culture. Unfortunately in Cyprus thus far we haven’t had any worthy authentic Mexican restaurants (in my opinion) so discovering that the place is run by a true Mexican entices you to try pretty much everything.
We kicked off the night by ordering a couple of Mezcalitas (which very quickly turned into a second round of drinks!) and nachos with homemade guacamole and dips. The Sopes were a really nice starter to introduce you to the authenticity the food there had to offer. This was followed by tacos de carnitas and tacos de jamaica.
The tacos de carnitas.. One of my favorite dishes of the evening was slow cooked pork. The meat was so juicy and tender it certainly didn’t require any toppings or sauces to overpower the flavourful dish. Also, I highly recommend trying out the tacos de jamaica which was with guacamole and hibiscus flowers. This is certainly something out of the ordinary for Cyprus and I dare you all to try it.
Last but not least we tried the enchiladas de mole. Ever since I heard of Cosme in NY I have always said that I had to try mole as it is traditionally made. I was surprised to find this dish to be one of my favorites – as they say don’t judge a book by its cover. At first glance the dish may not seem as appealing as the taco dishes do but the dish was exploding in flavours I could easily eat an entire dish by myself.
I recommend you guys try this out – 100% gluten free menu which offers such a wide variety of dishes to please everyone!
Gracias 😉
